Shaping the Future of Female Empowerment through Freelancing

Ubuntu Freelancers was established 2.5 years ago as a virtual recruitment agency, driven by the vision to support South Africans and meet the rising global demand for freelance talent. Our mission is clear: to connect freelancers with contractual employment opportunities, primarily in the UK and USA, for completely virtual positions.

Understanding the Freelance Advantage of South Africa

So, what is freelancing? A freelancer is a self-employed professional, often working with multiple clients at once, earning income per hour or project. Companies have started to choose freelancers because they gain access to specialised skills at a lower cost to the company – saving on expenses like holidays, benefits, and office space. South Africa’s favourable time zone, reputation for producing diligent, English-speaking, and well-educated talent, further adds to the appeal, to attract international clients.

The Growth of Freelancing

Freelancing has surged in popularity over recent years. According to the World Bank, nearly half of the global workforce now identifies as freelancers, with Africa representing 10.1% of this growing sector.

Notably, the freelancing landscape is predominantly women-led, with 63% of freelancers being female.

The ability to work remotely has transformed how women achieve financial independence while managing family responsibilities, redefining the work-life balance.

Supporting Women in the Freelance World

At Ubuntu Freelancers, we’re proud to be part of this trend. Our team includes 48 freelancers, with only two being male—reflecting the global shift towards female-led freelancing. Our agency was created to support all South Africans, not just women, but it’s clear that freelancing offers unique benefits for women, such as:

Creating a Community of Empowerment

At Ubuntu Freelancers, we don’t just connect freelancers with clients—we guide them every step of the way. Our comprehensive four-step onboarding process helps us understand each freelancer’s skills, personality, and readiness to work. Beyond onboarding, we’ve cultivated a supportive community where freelancers can enhance their skills, receive peer support, and engage in one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Our commitment to empowering women through meaningful work and financial independence is at the heart of Ubuntu Freelancers. We believe in the power of Ubuntu—the idea that we are stronger together than we are alone. By supporting each other and working towards a shared vision, we can overcome any obstacle and build a brighter future for everyone.
