As we close out Heritage Month in South Africa, we are reminded of the rich and diverse cultural landscape of our country. It has been a time to celebrate the unique traditions of all of our different communities and embrace the spirit of unity that makes South Africa truly unique. At the heart of this celebration is the African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’: “I am because we are.”
A few years ago, when we were looking for a company name, we eventually decided on Ubuntu Freelancers as we believed that ‘Ubuntu’ speaks to our interconnectedness as human beings. It emphasises the idea that our humanity is tied to the humanity of others, and that we are strongest when we stand together, no matter where we are in the world and what is going on in our lives. In South Africa, specifically, this concept is extremely significant, especially as we acknowledge the variety of heritages that contribute to our nation.
During Heritage Month, we have encouraged our team to remember that each individual’s story and culture adds something special to our shared journey. Every heritage, whether it’s passed down through generations or newly adopted, deserves to be acknowledged and cherished, and by embracing the spirit of ‘Ubuntu’, we have not only honoured our own heritage and traditions but have also shown respect for the diversity that exists within our daily communities.
